World Cup South Africa: 16 June 2010 “Youth Day” Podcast Day 6

South Africa did not manage to take home a victory today…

The symbolism of our failure on the field is ominous. Will we as a country and as a continent score even 1 of the 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) in our lifetime – let alone by the 2015 milestone?

In ’76 we gave our lives to score a goal – for equal education. In 1994 we averted civil war to score a goal of reconciliaton.  But 15 years after democracy, and we’re still enslaved by poverty, AIDS, unemployment, sexual exploitation and violence.

Children and youth of 76 are in their 30’s and 40’s and 50’s today. We’re still fighting for freedom and social justice.

In 2002 Visionaries In Africa brought together the largest gathering of youth and children to make their voices heard during the World Summit on Sustainable Development. For the next 8 years we’ve worked hard to realise those dreams of change and to create platforms for their voices to be heard and their stories to be told.

We will  hear from some of those children and youth, if the World Cup marks a victory in achieving any of the goals we had hoped for.
